The Ninth Hour

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of the prayers of your most pure Mother and all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

Glory to you, our God, glory to you.

O heavenly King, Comforter, the Spirit of truth, everywhere present and filling all things; Treasury of good things and Giver of life: Come and abide in us and cleanse us from every impurity, and save our souls, O good one.

(From Easter to Ascension, say rather “Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!” 3x)

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal: have mercy on us. (3x)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

O, Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse us from our sins. Master, pardon our transgressions. Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for your Name’s sake.

Lord, have mercy. (3x)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your kingdom come; your will be done on earth, as in heaven. Give us this day the Bread of Life; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.

Lord, have mercy. (12x)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: both now and forever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Come, let us worship God, our King, and bow down before him.
Come, let us worship Christ God, our King, and bow down before him.
Come, let us worship Christ, our King and our God, and bow down before him.

Psalm 83
How beloved your dwellings, O Lord of hosts. My soul longs, even faints for the courts of the Lord, my heart and my flesh have rejoiced in the living God. For the sparrow has found a home, the turtledove a nest for herself where she will lay her young – even your altars, O Lord of hosts, my king and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house, they shall praise you unto ages of ages. Blessed is the man, O Lord, whose help comes from you, whose heart has ascended in the high valley of weeping, into the place you have set, for the lawgiver shall bestow blessings. They shall go from strength to strength, the God of gods shall be seen appearing in Zion. O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer, give ear, O God of Jacob! O God, our protector, behold: look upon the face of your Christ. For one day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere, I would rather be laid low in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. For the Lord loves mercy and truth, God will bestow grace and glory, the Lord will never deny good things to those who walk in innocence. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man who sets his hope in you.

Psalm 84
You have been gracious, O Lord, to your land, you have brought back the captivity of Jacob. You have forgiven your people their iniquity, you have covered all their sin. You have ended all your wrath, you have turned from you burning rage. Restore us, O God of our salvation, and end your anger against us. Could you really be angry forever? Could you prolong your anger from generation to generation? Having restored us, O God, you will make us live again, your people will rejoice in you. Show us your mercy, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. I will hear what the Lord God will speak in me, for he will speak peace to his people and to his saints, to those turning their hearts to him. His salvation is very close at hand to all those that fear him, that glory may dwell in our lad. Mercy and truth have met together, righteousness has descended from heaven. For the Lord shall give his good kindness, our land shall yield up its fruit. Righteousness shall go before him and shall make his footsteps our pathway.

Psalm 85
Bow down your ear, O Lord, hear me, for I am poor and needy. Guard my soul, for I am holy, save your servant, o my God, whose every hope is in you. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for all the day long I shall cry to you. Gladden your servant’s soul, O Lord, for I have lifted my soul to you. For you, O Lord, are gentle and good, rich in great mercy to all who call upon you. Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer, heed the voice of my supplication. In the day of my affliction I cried out to you, for you have answered me. There are no other gods, O Lord, that can be likened to you, no works like your works. All the nations that you shaped, O Lord, shall come and worship before you, they shall glorify your name, for you are great in working wonders, you alone are a great God. Lead me, O Lord, in your way, I will walk in your truth, and gladden my heart in the awe of your name. I shall confess you, O Lord my God, in fullness of heart, forever I shall glorify your name, for great is your mercy to me, you have brought my soul up from deepest Hades. Transgressors have risen against me, O God, a violent mob sought after my soul, they have not set you before them. But you, O Lord God, are gracious, longsuffering and compassionate, great in your mercy and truth. Look upon me and have mercy, give your strength to your child, save the son of your handmaid. Work in me a sign for good and let them that hate me now see it and be disgraced, for you , O Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: both now and forever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, glory to you O God. (3x).

God, the only Good one, born of a Virgin for our sakes, you endured crucifixion and despoiled death by death. You revealed resurrection to the fallen. Do not despise us whom you fashioned with your own hand. Show your love for us, O Merciful and accept the she who gave birth to you and prays for us. Save your despairing people, O Saviour!

For your name’s sake do not give us up forever, and do not annul your covenant. Do not withdraw your mercy from us, for the sake of Abraham your beloved and for the sake of your servant Isaac and Israel your holy one

Daily Hymnody

Lord have mercy. (40x)

O good God, so very rich in patience and mercy, who are adored and praised at all times and at evey moment in heaven and on earth! You love the just and spare the sinner, inviting all to salvation with the promise of the good things to come! O Lord, accept our prayer at this time, and direct our lives according to your commandments. Sanctify our souls and bodies. Set straight our reasoning, purify and sober our understanding, and deliver us from every affliction, from every evil and illness. Surround us with your holy angels as with a rampart, that, guided and protected by their defense, we may reach unity in faith and the knowledge of your inaccessible glory. For blessed are you unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (3x)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: both now and forever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

You are more honourable than the cherubim, beyond compare more glorious than the seraphim! In Virginity you gave birth to God, the word: O you who are truly Theotokos, we extol you!

Lord, Bless!

Through the prayers of our holy fathers and mothers, O Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us! Amen.

Master, Lord Jesus Christ, our God, you have long endured our transgressions, and yet you have brought us to the hour when you showed the good thief the way to paradise, even as you were hanging on the life-giving tree. You destroyed death by death, have mercy on us sinners and your unworthy servants. We have sinned and transgressed, and are not worthy to raise our eyes and look on the height of heaven. We have abandoned the way of your justice and walked in the will of our hearts. Yet we implore your unbounded goodness: spare us, O Lord, according your great mercy. Our days have been wasted in vanity but save us for your holy name’s sake. Rescue us from the hand of our opponent, forgive us our sins; slay our carnal will, so that we, having put off the old man, may put on the new, and live for you, our Master and Benefactor. Thereafter, following your precepts, we may reach eternal rest, where those who rejoice have their dwelling. Christ our God, you are the true joy and gladness of those who love you and to you we give glory, together with your Father who has no beginning, and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.
